Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic PLAYER RATINGS: Defense all at sea, midfield missing in play and attacking edge atrophied on sobering night in Germany

After opening the Champions League season with a stunning 5-1 victory against Slovan Bratislava, Celtic headed to Dortmund with confidence that they could get a positive result.

Instead, they fell flat on their face on a dismal night for Brendan Rodgers’ men at the home of the Bundesliga giants.

Daizen Maeda gave the Celtic faithful something to cheer for when he canceled out Emre Can’s early penalty, but their joy was short-lived as the home side soon took home four goals in a devastating first-half defeat.

Two more followed after the break as Dortmund rose up, while Celtic were forced to contemplate another humiliation on Europe’s biggest stage.

Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy’s dazzling displays will rightly garner much of the attention, but their job was made significantly easier thanks to a desperate display from the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.

Here Mail Sport’s KEVIN MCKENNA rates both sets of players on display during the one-sided contest at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund midfielder Emre Can scored with an early penalty.

Borussia Dortmund (4-2-3-1)

Gregor Kobel – 6

Nothing can be done about Maeda’s leveler from close range. The only thing to watch out for was a comfortable stop to deny Idah.

Yan Couto – 6

He looked nervous at Maeda’s pace in the early stages, but it didn’t take him long to get back on his feet.

Waldemar Anton – 7

We walked for 90 minutes. He had little to do, but he handled everything that was asked of him with ease.

Nico Schlotterbeck – 7

He had a lapse in concentration during the frantic first 10 minutes, but other than that he wasn’t flustered as he kept Kyogo quiet.

Julian Ryerson – 7

I expected a tougher night against Kuhn. He spent most of the contest bombing forward, supporting his teammates.

Karim Adeyami wins match ball after scoring hat-trick in first half

Emre Can 6.5

He put aside the penalty that would have opened the scoring, but was caught napping at the back post for Celtic to equalise.

Pascal Gross – 7

He rarely wasted a pass and provided a platform for his more creative teammates to tear apart their tormented visitors.

Karim Adeyemi – 9

Unplayable. The Celtic defense ran ragged in the first half and scored a magnificent hat-trick. He struggled in injury time after the restart.

Julian Brandt – 8

Dortmund were given the freedom to pull the strings in the middle and Celtic’s central trio chased the shadows.

Striker Serhou Guirassy also scored a double against the furious home team

Jamie Gittens – 7

It was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet after our enterprising performance on the right wing.

Serhou Guirassy – 8

The classy forward had a double and could have had a few more. It is a major threat both in the air and on the ground.

Substitutes:

duranville (Adeyemi, 48)

Nmecha (Brandt, 62)

beier (Gross, 62)

bensebaini (Couto, 62)

Sabitzer (Guirassy, 70)

Subs not used: Meyer, Lotka, Şule, Azhil.

Nuri Sahin – 8

Thanks to a five-goal attack in the first half, he was able to put his feet up and enjoy himself after the break.

Celtic (4-3-3)

Kasper Schmeichel – 5

He conceded an early penalty and saw seven goals go, but kept the scoreline down with a series of sharp saves.

Alistair Johnston – 4

One of his most disappointing performances for Celtic. He had absolutely no answer to Gittens’ trick.

Auston Reliable – 3

He endured a violent baptism of fire. He was shaky and lacking in belief on the ball. He will have nightmares about Guirassy.

Liam Libra – 5.5

Celtic’s best player. He spent most of the game running towards his own goal but made several vital tackles to thwart the home team.

Auston Trust had a torrid night at the heart of defense in their European debut

Greg Taylor – 2.5

He was dragged all over the place by Adeyemi in the opening period and was put out of his misery with his half-time withdrawal.

Callum McGregor – 4

The captain had no influence on the proceedings. He failed to get on the ball and on rare occasions it was wasteful.

Arne Engels – 4

Anonymous. The perfect cross set up Maeda’s goal but he was rarely seen in advanced positions for the rest of the night. He clumsily tackled and awarded the second penalty.

Paulo Bernardo – 3

He was given the nod ahead of Hatate as reward for his recent good form, but was miles off the pace. Stuck in December.

Nicolas Kuhn – 4.5

I barely got a whiff of Celtic’s right side. He had a good opportunity in the second half, but as the chance passed he was left in two minds.

Daizen Maeda got on the scoresheet in the opening stages after heading home at the back post

Daizen Maeda – 5

The Japanese winger got off to a bright start with a goal from the poacher. I was trying to move forward, but I was fighting a one-man struggle.

Kyogo Furuhashi – 4

The upper part is completely isolated. It’s hard to remember he touched the ball.

Substitutes:

Wow (Taylor, 45)

mistake (Bernardo, 45)

Idah (Kyogo, 63)

Yang (Kuhn, 63)

ralston (Johnston, 86)

Subs not used: Sinisalo, Bain, Palma, McCowan, Nawrocki, Forrest, Welsh.

Brendan Rodgers – 3

He looked sad. A truly dreadful night at the office for the Celtic manager.
