Calcutta, Ohio (WKBN) – A local effort to help Hurricane Helene victims has failed.

Kolkata Fire Brigade just made a post on its Facebook page One of the trailers bound for North Carolina caught fire early Tuesday morning.

It was filled with supplies donated by local residents: items like bottled water, hand sanitizer and nonperishable food items.

The incident took place around 23:00 in the evening at kilometer 184 of Interstate 70. Investigators said the fire occurred after a tire on the trailer burst. At one point, smoke started coming out of all the door seals.

According to Kolkata Fire Brigade, all items were damaged. Another trailer participating in the trip was not involved in the fire.

The damaged items were dropped off at the Calcutta Fire Department in Columbiana County over the past few days.

However, donations continue to be collected for hurricane victims this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
