X870E and X870 Chipset Motherboards: Pricing Overview

AMD’s partners such as ASUS, ASRock, and MSI have introduced their latest motherboard offerings, which include the X870E and X870 chipsets and the AMD AM5 platform. These motherboards are designed to support a wide range of AMD Ryzen processors, including the Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 series, providing users with comprehensive CPU compatibility. Aimed at the high-end and enthusiast markets, the new cards feature optimized Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) configurations and advanced input/output (I/O) features. Key I/O features include support for Wi-Fi 7 and USB 4, ensuring high-speed connectivity and future-proofing for demanding applications and peripherals.

All motherboards released fit the ATX form factor, with micro ATX (mATX) and ITX variants expected to launch later in the year. These motherboards natively support DDR5 memory with speeds up to 5600 MT/s, and some models can handle memory speeds in excess of 8000 MT/s, appealing to users looking for maximum memory performance. The X870E chipset uses two Promontory 4 dies, supporting USB 4 and Gen 5 interfaces for GPUs and SSDs, as well as 24 Gen 5 CPU lanes and a combination of Gen 4 and Gen 3 Platform Controller Hub (PCH) vias. In comparison, the X870 chipset uses a single Promontory 21 die and retains the 5th Gen lanes but limits the PCH lanes to 4th Gen and 8th Gen 3; This may affect peripheral connectivity options.

Prices for the new AMD X870E and X870 motherboards range from $199 to $699, depending on features and brand. For example, ASRock offers the X870 PRO RS starting at $199, while ASUS offers the ROG Crosshair X870E HERO starting at $699. Other models from ASUS, ASRock, GIGABYTE and MSI are available in a range of prices to suit different performance needs and budgets. Additionally, AMD announced that motherboards with B850 and B840 chipsets are expected to be released in early 2025, possibly coinciding with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 event.
