“Speak No Evil” is the American remake of the Danish horror-thriller released by the same name just two years ago. Considering Hollywood’s history of largely unnecessary remakes of foreign films, I went into this movie with my skepticism level pretty high. So it’s a very pleasant surprise that this new version of “Bad Talk” turns out to be one of the most enjoyable films of the summer (though I think the bleakness of the 2022 original fits the overall narrative better, whereas the remake is significantly more sanitized).

In this surprising thriller, an American couple (Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy) are invited to stay at the remote farmhouse of a British couple (James McAvoy and Aisling Franciosi) they met while vacationing in Italy. Although things are pleasant at first, the husband’s increasingly erratic and aggressive behavior soon frustrates them and causes them to consider a quick separation. Its compelling story will have you hooked, but the real reason to watch is James McAvoy’s committed performance. The Scottish actor shines in a role that completely unleashes him.

“Strange Lover” has cult classic written all over it. This stylish thriller hits with all the force of a rifle shot and plays with audience expectations in creative ways. Presented in six episodes and performed out of turn, audiences are thrown straight into the action with the overarching story, then slowly pulled back as they move backwards and forwards in the timeline. An ideal watch for anyone who thinks the thriller genre lacks new ideas, it’s also a great vehicle for the talents of Willa Fitzgerald, who thoroughly lights up the screen.

As noted, “Strange Darling” is presented in a non-linear format and is set against the backdrop of an ongoing serial murder spree terrorizing the Western United States. In this setting of horror, we see a man (Kyle Gallner) and a woman (Willa Fitzgerald) meet in a shady motel for an alcohol-influenced one-night stand. What begins as an erotic encounter soon turns into something much darker and a deadly game of cat and mouse begins. On the surface this might seem pretty predictable, but in “My Strange Love,” nothing is as it seems.

This week marks the beginning of October, also known as spooky season, and that means pretty much every streaming service is gearing up to release all new horror movies for subscribers eager to be scared senseless over the next few weeks. One of the first new horror movies of the 2024 season is Prime Video’s “House of Spoils,” starring Ariana DeBose and produced by Jason Blum (of Blumhouse fame), so this wonder has many origins.

In “House of Spoils,” a chef (DeBose) opens his first restaurant, hoping to offer diners a true farm-to-table experience in a stunning remote landscape. But the ambitious chef faces numerous challenges, including a chaotic serving line, a questionable investor, and nagging self-doubts that he’s not cut out to lead a professional kitchen. Oh, and if all these obstacles weren’t enough to overcome, he also has to contend with the vengeful spirit of the property’s previous owner who tries to sabotage him.

It wouldn’t be the month of Halloween without a new adaptation of one of Stephen King’s classic novels, and this year director Gary Dauberman (known for his work on “The Conjuring” and the “It” series) is stepping up to bring in a new month of Halloween. The iconic vampire tale from the Master of Horror. This is definitely not the case where “Salem’s Lot” was turned into a movie/TV series along with the miniseries that aired in 1979. GIS It is often considered one of the best Stephen King adaptations, so this new Max adaptation of the story has a pretty good reputation.

Much like the original novel, it follows a writer named Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) as he returns to his childhood home in Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine. “We Grown Now” looks set to be one of the most acclaimed Netflix movies of the year. After debuting at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews (the film has an impressive 93% score). And heart is an apt word to describe this tender and emotional drama.

“The Platform” remains one of my favorite Netflix movies to this day. The combination of a crazy basic concept, nihilistic themes, and gut-wrenching horror had me hooked from the very beginning, and I’ve rewatched it several times since its debut in 2019 (it holds up very well to rewatching). I’ve been skeptical about the necessity of a sequel, but “Platform 2” is coming this week and I can’t wait to dive into this disturbing sci-fi universe again.

The sequel is once again set in a tower block-style prison where prisoners are fed via a descending platform; Those at the top choose the feast, while those at the bottom are left with just the crumbs. However, the publisher is keeping most of the plot under wraps. We know it will feature two new characters, Perempuan (Milena Smit) and Zamiatin (Hovik Keuchkerian), but critical details are being kept very quiet. With any luck, it may be worthy of the lasting legacy of the first.

This coming-of-age comedy-drama, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, received critical acclaim. The “V/H/S” series has always been a mixed bag, but now it is gearing up for its seventh release, “V/H/S Beyond.” Let’s hope the quality is a little closer to “V/H/S 2” and not so much like “V/H/S: Viral” (which was a real low point). Are you unfamiliar with the “V/H/S” series? This is an anthology series that brings together an eclectic mix of found footage short films, each coming from a different filmmaker and typically featuring a unique cast of characters.

As the name “Beyond” not-so-subtly suggests, this installment of “V/H/S” packages brings together various horror episodes, each with a sci-fi twist. In this anthology, you’ll find six distinct episodes, ranging from a sleazy paparazzi duo who get more than they bargained for when they sneak behind the scenes of a movie set, to a group of parachutist friends who have a mid-air encounter. with a UFO. This anthology film also marks the feature film debut of popular Twitch streamer Alanah Pearce, who starred in one of the short films called “Stowaway.”
