Mooretown Lighthouse ready for use

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — There’s a new resource in Shreveport’s Mooretown area that’s ready to handle any natural disaster or emergency. The Community Lighthouse is officially completed.

“We are often the first to lose power in the places we serve and the last to get it back,” said the Rev. Theron Jackson, pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. “So this is about making our community more resilient, and it’s absolutely free.”

The Lighthouse of the Mooretown community at Morning Star Missionary Baptist is ready for emergency use.

“What we wanted to do was ensure that communities like ours, which already face crisis on a daily basis, are also prepared when natural disasters occur,” Jackson said. “So this is about making sure that when there is no light in our society, there is power.”

The Lighthouse is equipped with solar energy and backup water supply.

There was an official ribbon cutting on Sunday.

More community lighthouses will be added to Caddo and Bossier neighborhoods. Community centers are designed to serve as neighborhood response centers during power outages and emergencies.

“So when there is no power, our power will kick in and you can plug in the devices,” Jackson said.

“And what’s really unique about what we do is that we already care about and appeal to the people who live in our community. … So when the power goes out, we will be proactive.”
