Red River leads after first day of girls state golf tournament – Grand Forks Herald

MANDAN – After playing one day in the Class A girls state golf tournament, Grand Forks Red River shot a 328 to hold an eight-stroke lead over West Fargo Sheyenne. Red River standout Ella Speidel also leads the individual leaderboard by one stroke after one inning. 76.

Sheyenne entered state this fall going 9-for-9 at the team championships. Prior to this week, the Mustangs had averaged 10 fewer hits than Red River, which was ranked No. 2 in the state.

Payton Stocker and Zoe Keene of Sheyenne are not far behind Speidel. Stocker, who shot a 77, is 15-17. He was working his way down the stretch to lead the group before three consecutive bogeys on the holes were capped by a double bogey on the par-4 18th.

Speidel managed to have a relatively consistent day with a par 11. He started the day on the back nine and advanced to the last par three of the day with +4 and birdied it. Speidel would then make bogey on the next hole to lock in a 76.

Our fellow Roughriders, Sophie Brakke and Lauren Soholt, both came from different paths to mark the 83s. Brakke, the EDC Senior Athlete of the Year, knocked down the par nine putt and didn’t let things get out of hand, limiting her compound errors to a triple bogey on the par-4 16th. Soholt found itself at +5 to five with two double bogeys but hit the green for birdie-two on the 15th and then came within four on the par-five 17th.

Keene took a nine-under 42 from the front and turned a back-to-back par 80 into six straight pars.

The teams will return to Prairie West tomorrow with Red River +40, Sheyenne +48, St. Mary’s will be in the top five with +75, Wahpeton +79 and Century +80.
