Huntsville’s Free LGBTQ+ Closet trailer was stolen

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHEN) — Huntsville’s Free LGBTQ+ Closet trailer was stolen from the back parking lot of Shenanigans Comedy Theater on Saturday night.

The 16-meter-long caravan was filled with clothes, shoes, accessories and books, free of charge to the public and anyone in need.

“It was a shock because it was the only way to actually store the clothes, sort the clothes, and then get them out to the community,” Jessica Cotton said.

Cotton is the co-founder of Shenanigans Comedy Theatre. The theater owns and operates the closet.

“The LGBTQ+ closet was created so that people in the community who are afraid of being judged or discriminated against when asking for resources know that they have a safe place to go and get what they need,” Cotton said.

Cotton said there were two different locks on the trailer, so he assumed the thieves came with a plan. He added that the caravan was full of belongings when it was stolen.

“The trailer was at capacity,” he said. “We were preparing for pride festival, one of our biggest events where we gave away the most clothing. “So it’s overflowing with every kind of clothes, shoes and accessories you can think of.”

Despite losses of over $6,000, Cotton said that would not deter them from serving their duty.

“While there may be some challenges and changes over the next few weeks, we are moving forward and plan to continue providing resources to the community,” he said. “Things like this can’t stop us from doing good in society.”

If you need clothes, you can still buy them. Shenanigans Comedy Theater wants you to reach out to them Facebook page. If you would like to donate, there are also donation details on their page.

They shared the following distinctive details of the trailer:

“There are notches on each of the twin-wheeled chrome bumpers. There are 2 specially drilled holes in the front of the trailer and there should be black, plastic guards around the 3 inch holes. Just beyond the side door there is a gash like a pickup truck or something with a sharp corner towards the trailer – the gash is about 2 inches wide with a deep scrape about 2 inches extending into the gash. “There were three round Master brand locks, one on the side door and two on the back door.”
