The “brutal survival roguelite turn-based city-building game” is coming to Nintendo Switch next month after receiving 95% positive reviews on Steam

Dotage (stylized dotAGE), one of last year’s biggest surprise indie games, is coming to Nintendo Switch on October 24. After nine years of development, Released on PC last October to unanimous praise.

It’s been a real joy to watch Dotage exceed Italy-based developer Michele Pirovano’s expectations. We chatted with the indie developer back in December, and here’s what he told us: He expected Dotage to “sell maybe 100 copies or so”The 20,000 copies sold at the time (obviously much more today) delighted Pirovano.

“This was my dream, actually it’s not even my dream, because I’m a pretty risk-averse guy and I have my feet on the ground,” he said about the game getting out of control. “So I didn’t think it was going to be good. When he did it, it was very, very exciting. It was perfect for me; for a week. Then I realized how much work it takes to keep up with so many players.”

Dotage’s upcoming Switch launch is another major indicator of the game’s surprise success, as well as a definite boon for overall sales. It’s billed as a “brutal survival roguelite turn-based city-building game,” and by all accounts that’s pretty accurate.

You play as a bearded village elder who leads his fellow villagers on a mission to survive the apocalypse, belied by the vibrant color palette and cute pixel character models. Taking on this daunting task means you’ll need to manage your community, assign workers to various tasks, and expand your village. “Grow crops, herd animals, bury corpses, craft tools, upgrade buildings, train professionals, and produce dozens of resources,” the Steam description reads.

As for the roguelite element, it comes when your village inevitably goes bankrupt and your Elder remembers lost memories, thus adding “new disturbances, mysterious VIPs, new Elders” and more to the mix. There are also “forces that rule your world,” including diseases, earthquakes, and, thankfully, non-violent invaders like kittens, presumably just to keep hope alive.
