Nobody Wants This: What to know about the Netflix binge that everyone is watching

Like all the best Netflix series, Nobody Wants This seems to come out of nowhere, yet it’s still the only thing everyone is talking about.

The romantic comedy series premiered last week and is already receiving rave reviews, and speculation about a second season is already in the pipeline. The series, which stars Adam Brody and Kristen Bell as (sort of) star-crossed lovers, has been climbing towards the platform’s most-watched list since its launch on September 26.

The plot is the plot of your classic romantic comedy. Joanne (played by Kristen Bell) is a serial dater who turns her life stories into material for the podcast she runs with her sister Morgan. But then he introduces her to Noah (Adam Brody), a Jewish rabbi who has just broken up with a long engagement. The two succeed, but they soon face the first of many obstacles: Can they overcome their differences and form a happy relationship together?

The creator of the series was Erin Foster. Her own life story was similar to the one portrayed on screen: a woman who began dating a Jewish man. She also eventually converted on his behalf through her own marriage. Interestingly, Foster is also the creative head of dating app Bumble.

The show is packed to the gills with great comedic talent. Kristen Bell (who voiced Anna on Frozen and protagonist Eleanor on The Good Place) plays Joanne, while Justine Lupe (best known for her role as Willa on Succession) plays Morgan.

American actor Adam Brody, who appeared in the TV series Shazam, Promising Young Woman and The OC as Seth, plays the character of Noah. His brother Sasha is played by Timothy Simons, aka Jonah Ryan, on Veep.

But that’s not all: Stephanie Faracy, Tovah Feldshuh, Sherry Cola, and Stephen Toblowsky also make a cameo, as does Ryan Hansen himself, oddly enough.

Reviews of the show were unsurprisingly glowing. In its five-star review, The Guardian called the film “as funny as When Harry Met Sally” and praised the chemistry between the two leads. “This is the funniest, sweetest, most heartbreaking, most romantic, most real thing we’ve seen since then, that is, since Colin from Accounts,” they wrote.

The Independent was also a fan, calling it “a series with clever characterization and a winning willingness to embrace offbeat scenarios” in its four-star review, while Vulture said the series “looks like what you’d get if you took Fleabag’s”. The sexual tension with the Hot Priest and the whole thing on Netflix… this is not a criticism by the way. Nobody Wants It is about having a good time, and it delivers just that.”
