Samsung Rolls Out Major Feature Update to Millions of Galaxy Phones

After promising new additions Galaxy AI features were added to older Galaxy phones earlier this monthSamsung is starting to roll out One UI 6.1.1 to many countries and devices.

The update was initially rolled out alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z flip 6 that were launched in July. These foldable devices had exclusive access to several features like Suggested Replies, Note Help, and Sketch to Image.

But other 2023 and 2024 Galaxy device owners in several countries have started receiving the patch after the first round of updates were released last week.

Users in India, Europe, South Korea, and the US have reported seeing the update on Reddit and Samsung’s community forums. It’s unclear how long it will take for the update to reach all regions, but keep an eye on the software update section of your phone’s settings menu.

The update is currently limited to select devices from the last two years, including the Galaxy S24 series, S23 series and S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5, and Galaxy Tab S9 series.

In terms of features, One Ui 6.1.1 owners can expect a mix of the following Galaxy AI tools depending on their device.

• Interpreter – A real-time language translation service that now includes a “listening mode” on additional devices.
• Chat Assistant – Now updated with Composer to draft text using generative AI.
• Suggested replies (Galaxy S24, Flip 6, and Fold 6) – Creates quick replies to messages sent from the Galaxy Watch 7 or Watch Ultra.
• Notes Help – automatically formats, summarizes, grammar checks, and translates notes. A new transcript feature does the same for audio recordings.
• PDF Overlay Translation – Translates text in overlays in PDF files or other images.
• Sketch To Image – Uses generative AI to add more content to a hand-drawn image.
• Portrait Studio- Uses generative AI to transform portrait images into different styles like 3D cartoons or watercolors.
• Instant Slow Motion – Applies the slow motion effect after shooting video, maintaining good image quality.

The Galaxy S22, Fold 4, and Flip 4 won’t have access to any of the new Galaxy AI features yet. Samsung hasn’t confirmed it will even roll out the tools to older phones, but it has done just that. For other Galaxy AI updates in the recent past.

Features that were exclusive to the Galaxy S24 when it launched in January It arrived on the Galaxy S22 a few months later. In March, Samsung said it would update “100 million” Galaxy devices with AI before rolling out updates to more phones. In July, a Samsung representative on the company’s community forums said that other camera features specific to the Fold 6 and Flip 6, such as Live Effect will come to Galaxy S22 series as well as Galaxy Tab S8 tablets.
