THE PENGUIN Producer Explains Decision to Rename Penguin “Oz Cobb” — GeekTyrant

Producer of DC series Penguin, Dilan ClarkHe touched on the decision to change Ozwald Cobblepot’s name to Oz Cobb in the series.

As you can imagine, some fans are unhappy with the name change, but the creative team was looking for something a little more realistic.

During an interview SFX Magazine“They didn’t change his name in the comics like they did with The Riddler, they went from Edward Nigma to Edward Nashton, from a fake name to a real name. They solidified the character by doing that,” Clark said.

He continued: “We had numerous conversations with DC Comics and Jim Lee (President, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer). At one point they considered changing the name but never did.

“Matt asked, ‘Can we call our character Oz Cobb?’ Jim said, ‘Absolutely!’ So we had a nod from the king himself. That little change in name allowed us to look at this character in a realistic way.”

Writer and producer Lauren LeFranc added: “Matt created a new canon in his movie, and I’m creating a new canon in this series. We have characters that you know, but we’re bringing a different perspective to them.

“In the Gotham City that Matt created in his movie, Cobblepott seemed less like a real person, like Cobb has a real last name. He’s a gangster, and that felt more true.”

Colin Farrell He reprises his role as the Penguin and sets out to take control of the city’s criminal organization.

Before talk about Farrell said of the film: “It’s dark, that’s all I can tell you. It’s really dark and really heavy, which I think it definitely did. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. I had a great time. But it’s incredibly violent.”

Speaking about the story, he said: “This is a man achieving a certain level of power or social status that he has always dreamed of. And the death of Carmine Falcone at the end of the movie fills that void in Gotham.

“And so there are various people trying to seize this power, and it’s Oswald’s journey, trying to get to the top, with extraordinary obstacles and very dark. Lauren LeFranc has written a really twisted eight-hour television series.”
