‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ is No. 1 again; conservative documentary ‘Am I Racist’ makes top 5 at box office

Then monster openingThe Tim Burton sequel easily returned to the top of the domestic box office charts Sunday with $51.6 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates. Down just 54% from a week ago, the Warner Bros. film’s North American gross already stands at $188 million. Internationally, it added $28.7 million, bringing its worldwide total to a staggering $264.3 million.

“Just a 54% drop is really impressive and indicative of some pretty solid word of mouth,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “Audiences are enjoying the movie.”

While its hold was strong, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” didn’t have much in the way of major new competition. Among the new offerings was the James McAvoy horror film “ Bad Talka satirical documentary about right-wing podcaster Matt Walsh; and Dave Bautista’s new action movie “The Killer’s Game.”

Second place in weekend ticket sales Bad Talk” is a remake of the 2022 Danish horror film about an unsuspecting family who decide to spend a weekend in the country with their new friends. McAvoy stars alongside Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy. With positive reviews and a clever Friday the 13th release date, the Blumhouse production, released by Universal Pictures, has earned an estimated $11.5 million from 3,375 locations.

” Deadpool & Werewolf “moved into third place in its eighth weekend with another $5.2 million. The Disney and Marvel blockbuster has now reached $621.5 million in North America and $1.3 billion globally.

The Daily Wire film “Am I Racist?” came in fourth at the box office, grossing an estimated $4.7 million in just 1,517 theaters. Described as a “Borat”-style mockumentary, the film stars conservative columnist Walsh as a “DEI intern.” Walsh pulled a similar stunt by posing as a gender studies professor in the 2022 film “What is a Woman?” Both were directed by Justin Folk.

“Am I Racist?” reportedly cost $3 million to make. The Daily Wire, co-founded by Ben Shapiro, partnered with SDG Releasing, a distribution company founded by “God’s Not Dead” writers Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman that promises “the lowest fees in the business,” to release the film. Among the trailers shown before “Am I Racist?” is another film aimed at conservative audiences: the upcoming Dinesh D’Souza film “Vindicating Trump.”

Rounding out the top five is “ ReaganThe Showbiz Direct production, starring Dennis Quaid as the former president, added $3 million in its third weekend, bringing its total domestic gross to $23.3 million.

Meanwhile, “The Killer’s Game” came in sixth with $2.6 million. Bautista plays a terminally ill hitman in the poorly reviewed action comedy. The faith-based “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” also rounded out the top 10 with a $1.5 million debut.

Amazon MGM Studios is making its Sundance debut in limited release, “ My old ass“The Coming of Age,” starring Maisy Stella, opened in seven theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Austin, grossing $171,242. It will open nationwide on September 27.

Next weekend, theaters will be showing Optimus Prime’s original movie, “Transformers One,” but “… Joker: Folie vs Deux ” is coming to the big screen on October 4th.

Estimated ticket sales at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
