Canada’s Trey Lyles Continues to Struggle in Loss to France

Sacramento Kings forward Trey Lyles had become disappointed in the group stage He was nearly dropped from the Olympic rotation, averaging two points, one rebound and one assist in just 10 minutes per game for Team Canada, while shooting a disappointing 22 percent from the field and just 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Lyles’ disappointment continued when Team Canada lost 82–73 to France, led by NBA star Victor Wembanyama, in the Olympic quarterfinals, effectively eliminating Team Canada’s chances of winning a medal.

After 12 minutes of play, Lyles had two points, two offensive rebounds, and a single defensive rebound while shooting 0-2 from the field and 2-4 from the free throw line. He finished his performance at the Olympics averaging 11 minutes per game, averaging two points per game, and grabbing just 1.7 rebounds per game, while posting horrendous 20.7/25/50 shooting splits.

Lyles’ performance is not reassuring for Kings fans, especially considering how important he could be for Sacramento next season. The Kings are still lacking depth at the power forward position, and Lyles is currently their most reliable backup forward.

It was a poor showing for Lyles, but he averaged 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Kings in Sacramento last season, shooting 44 percent from the field and 38 percent from three, making him a reliable backup forward. While playing internationally and in the NBA are different experiences, Lyles was expected to make a more significant impact for Team Canada in Paris.
