A couple living on Stokes Ferry Road were awakened by a loose trailer full of deer corn hitting their home at 2 a.m. on Aug. 2. Although their home sustained extensive damage, they are thankful they were not injured.

According to incident reports, the thieves who stole the trailer from the Pine Ridge General Store appeared to have the wrong trailer hitch on their truck and forgot to attach the safety chains.

The store has several trailers and each sells different items. The stolen trailer contained deer corn. Rowan County sheriff’s deputies received a report of the theft overnight and while reviewing security camera footage, they reported seeing a silhouette of a person behind the trailer shortly before a truck pulled into the parking lot from the direction of Salisbury. The truck backed up to the trailer, hitched up to it and backed up toward Salisbury. Unfortunately, due to the darkness, it was impossible to identify the truck or suspects, but RCSO is leaving the case open for further investigation.

Meanwhile, at 2:10 a.m., the homeowners were awakened by the stolen trailer crashing into the front of their home after it had detached from the truck. The driver of the truck continued on Stokes Ferry Road, but according to the husband, the trailer not only hit the front porch, but also the bedroom wall where the couple was sleeping. It shattered the windshield, scattered glass everywhere, and caused structural damage to the wall. A pole on the front porch was knocked over, the fence around the porch was knocked over, and decorations and yard work were damaged. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the husband said the story could have been completely different if the trailer had been heavier or if the propane tanks in the front of the trailer were not empty.

The homeowner told police he recognized the trailer because he had previously purchased deer corn from the store. The NC State Highway Patrol filed a report of the accident and towed the trailer, which is expected to be returned to the store once ownership is verified.
